ART

David Mkrtchyan’s art simultaneously articulates both a highly idiosyncratic and thoroughly universal lexicon of visual imagery, narrative momentum, and operative archetype that may often be connected to recognizable worldly referents, but just as often, their lineages become indecipherable in the quantum transfer native to any interpretation of his work whether by artistic inculcate or cultural marauder.

Mkrtchyan’s work is at once fantastic and phantasmal, in the truest sense of both terms. He is able to activate a wholly unique and working mystical reality that speaks to the burgeoning transcendental (and elusive) in all things, whilst presenting the painterly in a patois of technical perfection. His work exhibits a singularity of authorial verve and voice even when deriving inspiration from memory totems, personal-experiential reliquaries, or from moments of polyvalent vision.

There is a curiosity indigenous to the innovator and truth seeker, both, driven and driving David Mkrtchyan’s art--an architectonic sensibility ensconced in the animism of collective memory--of future and past--producing a hyper-reality of the present, that is, in fact, eternal.

The work is a result of the confluence of not only genotype and phenotype--Mkrtchyan’s genetic and epigenetic infrastructure—but their reinventions through circumnavigating a geostatic system of place and space spanning the latitudes of the Armenian Highland, the Caucasian Vortex, and a dislodged Diasporan exile home contextualized in a vast, seemingly endless flow of information, landscapes, and surrealities creating a cultural chrysalis of immense proportion.

The helix spirals of codified ingenuity interweave with the common-law happenstance of the non-coincidental, producing completely intentional gestations and births. The work in its relentless detail renders both the mythic and the narrative real in a tumult of imagery verging on the sensational, but rooted in the fundament of truth--a truth beyond fact, gleaned through the bodies and souls of the eternally present.
